You may have heard the term alkaline water, but are unsure exactly what it is. When compared to regular drinking water, alkaline water has a higher potential hydrogen (pH level). We measure a solution’s pH level by the amount of hydrogen ions present. Acidic substances have a high concentration of hydrogen ions and a low pH. Basic substances have low levels of hydrogen ions and a high pH. The pH scale has a range from 0 to 14. Everything below 7 on the scale is considered acidic, and everything above 7 on the scale is considered basic. Some examples of acidic foods include dairy, meats and fish. Most vegetables and fruits are usually considered base foods. Pure drinking water is 7 on the pH scale.
When added to water, alkaline substances like metals, minerals and salts, make it more basic. Water that is alkaline usually has a pH level of 8 or 9. Water becomes naturally alkaline when it passes over rocks, where it picks up minerals. When you purchase alkaline water however, it has usually gone through a chemical process called electrolysis. This is done with a product called an ionizer.
Alkaline water contains many important minerals. It contains calcium, important for bone, heart and muscle health. It has sodium, which regulates blood pressure. Alkaline water contains magnesium, which helps turn food into energy. It also includes potassium, an electrolyte that promotes healthy digestion and is essential for muscle function.
You may wonder if alkaline water is safe to drink. The answer is “yes”, it is safe to drink, and in fact, many studies have shown numerous health benefits to drinking alkaline water. Some of these benefits include: colon cleansing properties, immune support, hydration, weight loss and anti-aging properties, just to name a few.
Health experts suggest we drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Keeping hydrated throughout the day can improve productivity, memory, energy level and mood. It has been shown that alkaline water increases hydration by hydrating you faster and longer than regular water. Because of its many benefits, it may be time to consider adding alkaline water to your diet.
